Overview

“My work reflects on how the image-centric era has transformed our way of seeing”. -Changpeng Li

Changpeng Li's work reflects on the ways in which the image-centric nature of our contemporary era has transformed our way of seeing. His paintings present an antidote to the media's lightning-fast dissemination of images, consumed through an endless passive scroll, that have compressed our viewing time and stripped away the depth of our gaze.
Li's paintings depict media images as if they were negatives taken on a camera film, thereby alluding to slower forms of looking that have been surpassed by modern technology; in Li’s work, images from the media are taken back into the darkroom for “development” through painting, a process which seeks to reveal their underlying discursive structures. Through overlaying disparate images, and displaying seemingly unconnected scenes together as if part of one narrative, he creates a deliberate distance between the viewer and the vignettes depicted, thereby incarnating a sense of alienation and necessitating an investigative, lengthy gaze.
