Alexis Jang

Overview

“My quiet yet playful paintings are meditations on the subconscious and the relationships one has with themselves and others.” - Alexis Jang

Often emerging from her subconscious, Alexis Jang’s surreal works are veiled attempts at capturing the nuances of the relationship an individual holds with themselves, others and the world they inhabit.

Throughout her practice one finds visions of dreamlike scenarios which often take place at night, within which solitary figures bathed in monochromatic light appear lonesome and full of longing. Her works jolt the viewer out of the everyday and capture the unique feeling of unease brought forth by moments when life’s chaotic pace of constant transformation is replaced by a serene, holistic, almost omnipotent view of the world as a whole.

The artist is motivated by a life-long investigation into the lived-experience of womanhood, both her own and that of others. She investigates the realities of being a woman, while also considering the tropes, misconceptions and associations that surround this embodiment. Seemingly lost in thought or caressed by light, the women she depicts quietly take up space; they demand to exist as they are, refusing to mould themselves to conform to the expectations of others.
