Studio West is proud to present its inaugural exhibition, Tomorrow will be the Most Beautiful Day of your Life, a show of works by Victoria Cantons and Xu Yang. Capturing both artists at pivotal moments in their career, Tomorrow Will Be The Most Beautiful Day Of Your Life is the artist couple’s first duo show together. Despite their markedly different practices, the exhibition highlights the ways in which Cantons and Xu rely on each other for inspiration, support and collaboration. The title of the exhibition sets the tone for the show. Hope, Love, Fear, Escapism, Joy, and Freedom are just a few of the themes that weave through the artists’ brushstrokes. Large, empowering works by Cantons greet you as you enter the gallery space, enveloping you in familiar images of blossoming roses – a favourite of her mother. These are juxtaposed to ethereal, powerful and lavish works by Xu; pink wigs, unicorns and mirrors float around her canvases, drawing on the performativity of identity, and the way we understand gender. Many of the works in the exhibition offer personal reflections of the artists’ identity, and explorations of their own sense of ‘self’.
