Overview

“My work explores that sense of deep entanglement I feel with organic life forms, both human and non-human.” - Rachel Bungey

In Rachel Bungey's practice, natural anatomy serves as an inspiration for abstract forms. Her work is concerned with entanglement; her hybrid sculptures combine and distort familiar natural shapes - the bone of a whale's jaw twists and melts into a praying mantis’ leg - forming a figure that is simultaneously familiar and uncanny. These sculptural concerns transition into her paintings, in which thickly rendered interlocking shapes dance between canvases in muted, chalky tones.

Bungey’s work is as much personal as it is ecological, drawing inspiration from the connection she feels with specific animals in order to recreate the blurred lines that exist between the human and the non-human.
