Overview

“My practice delves into the anticipation of a future that forever remains just out of reach, idealised and anticipated, yet always uncertain.” - Ji Won Cha

Ji Won Cha’s practice seeks to redefine the concept of the sublime in the context of the 21st century, specifically focusing on identifying what elicits the sensations of sublimity and uncertainty that permeate both our personal lives and the broader societal framework. Cha’s work encapsulates the nuanced emotions that swell during extended periods of anticipation, in which we eagerly await a future that is expected to unfold. Her practice situates itself within an examination of the digital age in which, inundated with an excess of information at an unprecedented pace, the line between fact and fiction blurs.

Emphasising the themes of uncertainty, Cha’s paintings are a visual exploration of the conflicting emotions of hope and despair, perpetually questioning the concept of ‘fate’. Her imagery draws from references to rich landscapes that venture into fantastical worlds. Employing images that represent heightened sensory experiences, her artistic practice delves into the anticipation of a future that forever remains just out of reach, idealised and anticipated, yet always uncertain.
