Maria Joannou’s paintings, defined by distinct clarity and clearness, address the viewer directly. On initial inspection, one is struck by the relationships between the figures; moments of connection that define and shape any individual are laid plain before the viewer.  
 
The works are themselves predicated on the nuances and realities of interpersonal-relationships, creating a space for reciprocal intimacy between the artist and subject, the subjects themselves and, by consequence, the viewer. What becomes clear is that Joannou’s paintings are predicated on a profound sense of alliance. We are permitted to invade a very private space without hesitation, guilt or voyeurism, and welcomed into a realm where different stories of passion, love, pain and longing unfold before us. 
Biography

Maria Joannou is an artist based in Athens, Greece. She is represented by Eleftheria Tseliou Gallery (Athens, Greece), and recently presented a solo show with the gallery. Her work has featured in multiple group exhibitions such as: Art Athina 2022 (Athens, 2022 with Eleftheria Tseliou Gallery), High Humanity curated by Jack Siebert (Paris, 2022) and Time is A Child curated by Burcu Fikretoglu (Island of Leros, 2023).
