Emma Eichorn

Overview

“In my work, small shifts in colour, light and gradient boast narratives that are implicit of different mind-sets, internal spaces, and psychological existences.”Emma Eichorn

Emma Eichorn's paintings are close and colourful. The worlds she builds are magical, artificial and bright, yet strangely mundane. Small shifts in colour betray complex narratives born from different mind-sets, internal spaces, and psychological existences. Populated only by enigmatic figures whose bodies are fluid and stylised, her works are mysterious in their message yet relatable due to their emotional intensity.

Eichorn’s practice is fuelled by material and process based experimentation, with each painting seeking to present new and innovative ways of building space and form on the canvas. She works in a slow and deliberate manner, layering paint alongside using subtractive methods such as taping, which once peeled away reveals a flat and graphic image.

She often utilises patterns, painted painstakingly by hand, with floral motifs repeated throughout paintings. Her most recent works see figures escaping into natural landscapes inspired by textiles and tapestries. In these instances, the figures'  surroundings become graphic and fractile, serving to both imply illusionistic space and simultaneously warp, distort, and fragment reality.
